Construction To Begin On Leeds’ £57m College Campus

It won’t be long now before the frames go up and the concrete reinforcement is set in place on the brand new Leeds City College Quarry Hill campus development, as the project prepares to swing into action.

Work is set to begin shortly on the £57 million development, which will house the college’s creative and digital arts and health and social sciences departments. The building will be erected at Eastgate alongside the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds College of Music and the Northern Ballet Theatre.

Construction contractors have been chosen and a deal struck to the tune of £37.7 million to build the new campus over the coming years, with a completion date forecast for summer 2019, ready for September’s student intake. The new campus will be part-funded by a £33 million grant from the Leeds City Region Local Growth Deal.

Louise Child, director of capital projects at Leeds City College, said: “This innovative campus will incorporate science labs, computing and digital technology labs, specialist childcare training facilities, performance theatres and recording studios.”

She added that the new campus will offer students a contemporary learning environment that highlights the college’s commitment to meeting the needs of the local economy.

Meanwhile, chairman of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, Roger Marsh, commented that the city has the highest concentration of further and higher education facilities in the Northern Powerhouse and “cannot afford to sit still” if Leeds’ reputation as a sector leader is to be maintained.

Ellis Williams Architects have drawn up the plans for the college development, which is expected to take the form of an 11-storey structure.
