Kirkstall Forge Development Plans Submitted
A detailed planning application for the development of the Kirkstall Forge site in Leeds has been submitted to Leeds City Council by CEG.
The firm intends to build 112 family homes, as well as retail, leisure and community facilities, which will be situated around a public square.
Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBStudios) have designed the homes, which will be spacious with open staircases, roof lights and 12-foot high ceilings in living spaces. The buildings themselves have been designed to look like the local stone of the old forge building and Kirkstall Abbey.
The neighbourhood itself has been designed to be pedestrian friendly, with tree-lined streets and garages located below the buildings.
Associate at FCBStudios Andrew Macintosh commented: “Much of our inspiration has been taken from ‘model villages’ such as Saltaire and the steep terraced streets found in many Yorkshire towns.”
He added that there’s also been a Scandinavian influence in terms of ideas about co-housing.
This is just the first phase of development on the 57 acre site, which will eventually become a mixed-use community with over 1,000 homes, 300,000 sq ft of office space, and 100,000 sq ft of retail, leisure and community space.
There are many new housing developments planned in the Leeds area at present, with Leeds City Council unveiling its housing and transport proposals for the East Leeds Extension and East Leeds Orbital last month.
5,000 new homes are planned under these proposals, along with the new road, better pedestrian and cycle infrastructure and new green spaces.
