Plans Submitted For New University Facility
Plans have been submitted for a new creative arts building in the centre of Leeds that will provide a home for Leeds Beckett University’s School of Film, Music and the Performing Arts.
The aim is to create a flagship property that will bring nearly 2,000 staff and students together under one roof, where at the moment they are split across multiple buildings and locations.
Designed by architect Hawkins Brown, it is hoped that the £75 million building will become “a gateway” to the planned Leeds Innovation District. It is also hoped that having a creative arts centre will boost the city’s bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2023, the Yorkshire Post reported.
Professor Paul Smith, deputy vice-chancellor at the university, said that submitting the plans for approval is a “significant step in our plan to enhance our teaching and research facilities with 21st century accommodation for the Northern Film School, performing arts, music, technology and fashion”.
If the scheme is approved, construction is expected to begin in September, with the building completed by 2020.
The university currently operates across two campuses – its City Campus, which is located in the city centre and its purpose-built Headingley Campus, which is set in 100 acres of parkland approximately three miles outside the city.
When work on the new ten-storey building commences, those charged with delivering the project will no doubt be looking for concrete reinforcement in Leeds, along with other construction supplies and services. Talk to us today about how we can support your next building project.
