New Roofing Guidance Published To Cut Risks, Costs & Waste
Housebuilders around the UK might want to make sure they have a copy of new roofing guidance published late last month by the Trussed Rafter Association (TRA).
The new documentation, which is for masonry-built properties, has been designed to reduce the costs, risks and waste from spandrel panel construction. It provides evidence-based technical best practice guidelines relating to weather protection, fire and acoustic performance, structural requirements, design and safe installation of these panels.
It’s been endorsed by the National House Building Council (NHBC), with a recent survey from the organisation revealing that approximately 17 per cent of new home sites are already using spandrel panels. And manufacturers are reporting a rise in interest in these offsite components, particularly from those companies building apartments and low-rise housing.
Chairman of the TRA Jonathan Fellingham said: “TRA members and NHBC inspectors have shared concerns about the quality of construction in some areas, so it’s vital that housebuilders understand best practice in design and installation to achieve the best results. We have collaborated with the [Structural Timber Association] and [the] NHBC to ensure the challenges housebuilders face are covered so the standard of installation is as high as possible.”
There are many benefits of using these kind of panels in construction, including quick installation, lower costs, little to no site waste, onsite safety improvements because less time working at height is required, and offsite manufacturing. They can also be used to address the issue of skills shortages onsite.
