Tata Steel Supplier Liquidates, 250 Jobs Lost
Fairwood Fabrications, an engineering company in Port Talbot that has been in the industry for over 35 years, has sadly gone into liquidation this month (July), resulting in the loss of 250 local jobs.
The company had been supplied Tata Steel with materials and was also involved in making steel buildings and products all over the UK, the South Wales Evening Post reports. Chairman Gherold Davies said the firm’s financial difficulties were in part down to the problems facing the steel industry in the UK, although it was also adversely affected by delays on the £1 billion Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon project.
Bethan Jenkins, South Wales West AM, called on the Welsh government to be held accountable for job losses in the steel industry following this latest announcement. “The Welsh government has serious questions to answer and must be held accountable for its abject failure in offering sufficient support to the industry at this already difficult period. The company had previously approached the Welsh government financial assistance in order to restructure but the request was refused,” she said.
She went on to note that that the steel industry around the UK is in a period of uncertainty and the Welsh government is adding to this and affecting thousands of people whose livelihoods actually depend on the sector.
Earlier this month (July 11th), the sale of Tata Steel UK was suspended by the company as it sought to find more sustainable options for its Europe portfolio, now looking into whether a joint venture with a different steel company like Thyssenkrupp in Germany could be viable.
