Hospital Roof Repairs Halted For Migrating Birds

How to Choose the Right Roofing Sheet

Roofing contractors working on Bridgnorth Hospital in Shropshire have had to delay work as swoops of house martins had made their nests while they prepared for their migration to Africa.

According to the Shropshire Star, after the discovery, hospital workers used the roofer’s scaffolding to place martin and swift boxes on the building to encourage the birds to continue using the site in future years.

The house martins were noticed on their arrival by Carol Wood, of Bridgnorth Swift Group, who donated the bird boxes, and Luke Neal, of the Canal and Rivers Trust. They spoke to the scaffolders and the hospital’s site admin manager workers, who all agreed to suspend the work.

Mrs Woid said: "House martins had nested on the old part of the hospital where builders were making repairs. We thought it would be a great idea to put up some artificial house martin boxes, as they are more successful with artificial boxes than with their own creations, which tend to dry up and fall apart.”

The Bridgnorth Swift Group constructed a total of three martin boxes and two swift boxes, which were donated to the hospital to be put into place by the roofing contractors.

The boxes will be erected before the scaffolding is dismantled, so in following years the birds will have a suitable place to breed.

It is thought that the roofing work hadn’t disturbed the birds’ breeding, and if it had, the new boxes will help mitigate this.

The swifts, swallows, and martins are due to finish nesting and begin their long journey to Africa any day, at which point the roof repair work will be completed.
