New Student Flats Development Given Go Ahead In Leeds

Developer Alumno has been granted permission to construct a seven-storey purpose-built student accommodation block at a site on Whitelock Street.

The Construction Index reported that the developer has described the location as currently “disused” in its planning application, with the new property set to deliver 105 residential units that will provide homes for 411 students.

As well as the residential units, which will be a mix of four to eight bed cluster flats, there will be a range of communal facilities on site, including a gym, study, laundry room, TV room and roof terrace. There will also be a bike shed.

The building currently on the Whitelock Street site is due to be demolished next year, with construction starting shortly thereafter.

Alumno managing director David Campbell told the news provider that it is the “ideal location” for such a development because of its “proximity to the universities and city centre”.

Mr Campbell added: “We believe this development will be a great addition to this emerging, creative district and will offer significant regeneration benefits at a crucial time.”

Leeds is experiencing something of a student accommodation construction boom at present. The Yorkshire Evening Post recently reported that the public consultation for what would be the city’s tallest student accommodation block has now opened.

Under current plans, Olympian Homes intends to construct a 43-storey student accommodation block on the Arena Point site in the city, which could house up to 720 students if it is approved and completed.
