Developer Sought For Prestigious Project In Leeds

Leeds City Council has invited developers to express their interest in taking on the redevelopment of a site on Lisbon Street in the city centre.

According to the council it is one of the “most prestigious city centre development opportunities” available. The site itself spans 1.12 hectares, with the council stating that it could accommodate up to five buildings and deliver more than half a million sq ft of business-led space.

Its proximity to the Leeds business district, as well as the proposed Innovation District which is currently being developed, make it an attractive prospect.

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, explained that the city needs more high-quality office space, as well as hotels and leisure facilities to support its growth.

She described the Lisbon Street site as “ideal for grade A office space and high-end hotel operators looking to cater for this growing professional market and the ever-increasing numbers of visitors to the city”.

The council added that it will accept proposals for separate lots, as well as the site as a whole. It is looking to partner with developers to maintain the city’s growth rates and continue to attract high-quality employers to the region.

As part of the Northern Powerhouse, Leeds has been in the spotlight following the government’s publication of its Northern Powerhouse Strategy last year. Last month, AECOM warned that cities like Leeds that are considered part of this powerhouse need to make sure they don’t neglect housing needs while developing other areas.

The firm’s director and business unit leader for the North of England Richard Green told The Planner that cities like Leeds can only hope to continue growing if they are able to provide attractive places for people to live, as well as work.
