3 Steps To Protect Your Home For Winter

The winter season can affect your home like no other season. The freezing temperature, wind, rain, and snow can combine to cause problems all across the UK.

As we prepare to batten down the hatches for the colder months, there are many things we can do to prepare the interiors and exteriors of our homes for winter, and we have a few steps to help make sure the roof of your home is ready for the season.

1. Clean your gutters

Your gutters should be cleaned each season, but the most crucial time is the autumn/winter cusp, as the falling leaves will add more debris to your gutters.

Neglecting this job could lead to blockages that cause water damage to your home, especially during periods of heavy rain or snow. Make sure that the water that falls on your roof is channelled away from your home.

2. Get your roof inspected

A roof inspection is an often ignored task but is one of the more important tasks for any homeowner when preparing your home for winter. A roofing contractor can inspect your roof for broken or loose shingles and ensure it is structurally sound.

3. Get your chimney inspected

It is crucial to get your chimney inspected and clean before you plan to use your fireplace for the colder months. If you have a wood-burning fire, it will cause deposits of creosote on the inside of your chimney, which is not only carcinogenic but also highly flammable.

When it builds up in your chimney, the smoke from a fire can cause it to ignite, which in turn can cause a chimney fire. Many home fires are caused by chimneys.

Preparing your home for winter isn’t a marathon, but it does take a little bit of forethought.
